Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Transit Planning Intern to join our team in Middleton, WI.
This position is expected to begin in May 2027.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Planning and project development activities for transportation projects, with a focus on transit projects, under supervision of more senior staff.
- Supporting planning studies and reports for new and updated plans and programs.
- Collecting a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics, such as census information, land use, roadway network, crash records, and asset inventories.
- Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze data and prepare detailed maps for use in reports.
- Conducting concept level evaluation of transportation improvement options.
- Documenting and presenting findings on transportation planning projects.
- Researching current transportation related topics at local, State, and Federal levels.
- Researching project options and documents findings
- Assisting with other duties assigned by senior staff and/or Project Managers.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Planning, Urban Design, or related field and must have completed at least two years of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Pursuing a MA/MS in a related field.
- Previous internship or co-op experience.
- Desire to help shape high quality transit systems in cities across the United States, including municipalities like the City of Madison.
- Self-motivated individual with strong organizational skills
- Demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and graphical skills
- Coursework and/or project experience in transit planning and policy foundations including transit network concepts, conducting qualitative and quantitative assessments, and awareness of public engagement best practices.
- Involved in student organizations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Basic proficiency with Geographic Information Systems such as ArcMap, ArcPro, and ArcGIS Online.
- Experience in preparing graphics and visuals for a technical and public audience.
- Ability to work as a member of a team or perform independent work as required.
