Job Description
The Civil Highway Designer – OpenRoads role is based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
The role supports the delivery of MTO highway infrastructure projects within a multidisciplinary engineering team. The position contributes to provincial roadway design, including urban and rural highways, under the guidance of senior engineering leadership. The role involves developing roadway designs using OpenRoads from planning and design to construction support, preparing technical documentation and reports, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including traffic, environmental, and structural engineering professionals. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines throughout all project phases.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and deliver roadway designs for MTO highway infrastructure projects using OpenRoads, from preliminary design through detailed design and construction support.
- Prepare roadway design deliverables, including plans, profiles, cross-sections, geometric layouts, drainage designs, utility coordination drawings, and associated technical documentation.
- Apply Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards, Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guideline to all project work.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including traffic, environmental, structural, drainage, and utility disciplines, to support integrated project delivery.
- Develop design quantities, cost estimates, and contract documentation, and provide technical support during tendering and construction activities.
- Participate in project meetings with clients, subconsultants, contractors, and internal team members, documenting decisions and supporting action item follow-up.
- Work closely with project managers and technical leads to support project delivery, schedule management, resource planning, and budget objectives.
- Monitor project progress, identify potential risks or design challenges, and contribute to effective solutions to maintain project schedules and deliverables.
- Conduct site visits and field investigations to support design development, data collection, and construction-stage activities.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and technologists, supporting their professional development and project contributions.
- Maintain adherence to company quality management procedures, drafting standards, and industry best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflows, enhance design efficiency, and promote continuous improvement initiatives.
- Commit to ongoing professional development and remain current with advancements in transportation engineering practices, standards, and software tools.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Civil Engineering Technician/Technology Diploma + 4 years relevant experience.
- 1+ year of experience using Bentley InRoads or OpenRoads software.
- 4+ years of experience using AutoCAD.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in civil engineering, with a focus on transportation and roadway design projects.
- Strong understanding of Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards, Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) guidelines, and Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) design practices.
- Experience delivering MTO highway infrastructure projects is considered a strong asset.
- Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer and AutoCAD; experience with Civil 3D and InRoads is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and dependable, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to mentor junior staff and contribute to a positive team environment.
- Excellent attention to detail, with strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Experience working within a consulting engineering environment is considered an asset.
- OACETT certification (C.Tech. or C.E.T.) is considered an asset.
