Job Description

AECOM is looking for a Principal Pavements Engineer to join our Melbourne team and play a leading role in delivering major infrastructure projects across Australia.

This is an opportunity to bring your technical expertise, industry experience and leadership to complex pavement challenges across aviation, ports and transport. You'll work alongside some of Australia's leading specialists, influence major project outcomes, build trusted client relationships and help grow AECOM's Pavements capability across Australia and New Zealand.

You'll have the platform to combine deep technical expertise with client leadership, project delivery and business growth — while helping develop the next generation of pavement engineers.

How you'll make a difference

  • Lead the pavement design and engineering of complex, high-profile aviation, ports and transport projects.
  • Provide technical direction across pavement design, rehabilitation, materials, investigation and construction methodologies.
  • Review and approve pavement designs, calculations, specifications, reports and technical documentation.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver practical, innovative and technically robust engineering solutions.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to clients, bringing specialist pavement expertise to complex project challenges.
  • Interpret pavement investigation and testing data, including FWD, HWD, GPR, LWD, profiler and surface friction testing, and translate it into sound engineering decisions.
  • Build and strengthen senior client relationships, identify opportunities and contribute to winning major projects.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, sharing your knowledge and helping build the next generation of pavement specialists.
  • Contribute to the growth and strategic direction of AECOM's Pavements practice across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Champion technical excellence, innovation and knowledge sharing across the wider business.

Why this role

This is more than a senior technical role. It's an opportunity to influence where pavement engineering goes next.

You'll work on complex infrastructure where the technical challenges are significant, the scale is substantial and the outcomes matter. From major airports and ports to critical transport networks, you'll help solve pavement challenges that demand experience, sound judgement and innovative thinking.

You'll have the opportunity to shape projects, influence clients, develop people and contribute to the growth of a specialist capability with a truly national and global reach.

With AECOM's aviation and transport network spanning Australia, New Zealand and the world, you'll have access to expertise, opportunities and projects well beyond Melbourne.

Qualifications

What you'll bring

We're looking for an established pavement engineering leader who combines deep technical expertise with commercial awareness, strong client relationships and a genuine passion for developing people.

  • Degree qualified Civil Engineer with significant experience in pavement engineering and pavement design, ideally 15+ years within a consulting environment.
  • Chartered Engineer and/or RPEV accreditation, or working towards registration.
  • Proven experience leading the design and delivery of major pavement projects across aviation, ports and/or transport infrastructure.
  • Recognised technical expertise in pavement design, rehabilitation, materials and construction methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of Australian pavement design standards and investigation techniques.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and independent review of complex pavement designs.
  • Proven ability to develop senior client relationships, identify opportunities and contribute to successful bids and project wins.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and mentoring engineers.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and leadership skills.
  • A genuine desire to contribute to the growth and future direction of a leading pavement engineering practice.

If you're ready to lead major projects, influence clients, develop future leaders and shape the future of pavement engineering, we'd love to hear from you.

Bring your expertise. Lead from the front. Shape infrastructure that moves Australia forward.
