Job Description
The Data Engineering Specialist will join the AECOM Environmental team, embedded within a cross-functional digital group supporting environmental project delivery across the Americas. This is not a pure database administration role — the successful candidate will blend environmental data management (EDM) expertise with broader digital capability, contributing to workflow automation, reporting development, dashboard delivery, and implementation support.
The role is based in the Romania to support time zone alignment with Western Canada teams. The candidate will own day-to-day support for environmental data systems while also actively contributing to digital implementation and rollout activities across the business line.
Environmental Data Management (EQuIS)
Develop, maintain, and support EQuIS environmental data systems including custom report creation and data quality workflows.
Extract and transform environmental data for reporting purposes, ensuring fitness for use across project teams.
Integrate EQuIS outputs into Power BI dashboards and paginated reports, delivering reliable data pipelines from source to visualisation.
Troubleshoot EQuIS configuration, data imports, and reporting issues for internal project teams.
Reporting & Dashboard Development
Build and maintain Power BI dashboards, including data modelling, DAX formulas for calculated columns and measures, and reporting workflow configuration.
Develop Paginated Reports (RDL) for structured, print-ready environmental reporting outputs.
Write SQL Server / T-SQL queries to support complex reporting workflows, including views, temporary tables, and data transformation logic.
Design and maintain relational data models and database structures to support reporting and workflow integration requirements.
Workflow Automation & Process Development
Design and deploy workflow automation using Microsoft Power Automate for process orchestration across project and reporting workflows.
Develop advanced Excel automation including macros and scripting to reduce manual effort in data compilation and reporting tasks.
Build or configure custom automation solutions using Python, C# or similar scripting/development languages to support data management, reporting pipelines and integration tasks.
Identify digitisation opportunities across project teams and implement scalable, repeatable solutions.
Digital Implementation & Rollout Support
Support the implementation and rollout of digital tools and platforms across the Environment business line, including onboarding, configuration, training material development, and hypercare.
Collaborate with the broader digital transformation team across the Americas to share best practices and carry forward lessons learned.
Work with project teams at inception to identify digital needs, configure appropriate tools, and establish data flow processes.
Provide ongoing support through feedback-driven tool improvements, scope changes, and project close-out debriefs.
Write clear documentation and user manuals for tools and workflows.
Platform Integration
Help integrate platforms used by the business line, including EQuIS, Power BI, Power Automate, and related Microsoft ecosystem tools.
Identify new opportunities and applications for the digital toolkit as the business line's needs evolve.
Qualifications
Required
Minimum of two years' experience in environmental consulting, environmental data systems or related project delivery context.
Demonstrated experience with EQuIS for environmental data management, including report development and data workflows.
Hands-on experience with Power BI, including data modelling, DAX and Paginated Reports (RDL).
Experience with SQL Server / T-SQL, including query writing, views and data transformation.
Experience with Microsoft Power Automate for workflow or process automation.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including macro development and automation scripting (VBA and PowerQuery).
Strong organisational skills, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities.
Excellent communication skills with a consultative, service-oriented approach to internal stakeholders.
Python scripting experience, particularly for data management, reporting automation or integration workflows.
Custom development experience using Python, C# or similar scripting/development languages for tool or integration builds.
Relational database design and data model development experience.
Strong English communication is expected.
Practical problem-solving approach with the drive to take ownership of a creative, delivery-focused role.
Preferred / Advantageous
Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Services, or cloud-based data platforms, enabling scalable data integration and enterprise reporting.
Familiarity with API integrations and system-to-system data pipelines across enterprise tools.
Exposure to DevOps practices (version control, CI/CD pipelines) for managing and deploying data/reporting solutions.
Broader understanding of environmental consulting workflows, including field data collection, lab data, regulatory reporting, and project lifecycle data needs.
Experience leading or supporting tool rollouts, change management, and adoption strategies across distributed teams.
Experience with Power Apps for lightweight application development.
