Job Description
Job Title: Senior BIM Modeler – Mechanical (HVAC, Plumbing & Fire Protection)
AECOM is seeking a highly experienced Senior BIM Modeler specializing in mechanical building services — encompassing HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems — to join our Mechanical Engineering practice. This role is the primary digital delivery contributor for mechanical content across multi-discipline building services projects, taking full ownership of the federated mechanical model, leading clash detection, enforcing BIM standards, and producing construction-ready coordinated deliverables.
The Senior BIM Modeler operates with a high degree of autonomy on all standard mechanical scopes, leads BIM workflow for junior modelers, drives improvements to team standards and content libraries, and acts as the primary BIM coordination contact with other disciplines and the Common Data Environment (CDE) manager.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and deliver federated mechanical Revit MEP models across all project stages, including HVAC ductwork and air distribution, chilled and heating water pipework, ventilation plant, plumbing services (domestic hot and cold water, above-ground drainage, sanitary), and fire protection systems (sprinkler pipework, suppression mains, hydrant and hose reel installations).
- Manage parametric mechanical Revit families and content to agreed LOD/LOIN requirements, ensuring model elements carry correct shared parameters, classification codes, system types, and asset data per the project’s BIM Execution Plan and Employer’s Information Requirements (EIR).
- Produce model-derived schedules and data exports — duct and pipe sizing schedules, equipment lists, plant room layouts, pressure drop summaries, and sprinkler head counts — ensuring consistency between model data and engineering documentation.
- Translate mechanical engineering design intent from schematic layouts, P&IDs, engineers’ mark-ups, and calculation outputs into accurate, fully coordinated 3D model geometry and associated 2D documentation; escalate design conflicts or ambiguities to the responsible engineer promptly.
- Enforce model quality and BIM compliance through regular health checks covering system naming conventions, family parameter completeness, flow direction tagging, view template application, and workset discipline; document findings and drive corrective action within the project team.
- Self-check all model outputs and drawing deliverables prior to engineer review for completeness, graphical accuracy, and compliance with applicable BIM standards, project-specific requirements, and team BIM protocols.
- Review deliverables produced by junior mechanical BIM modellers, providing structured feedback and documenting outcomes in the project record in accordance with team QA procedures.
- Coordinate mechanical model interfaces with other MEP disciplines and with architectural and structural models through formal interdisciplinary clash detection sessions; independently resolve routine spatial conflicts and escalate structural or design-intent conflicts to the relevant engineer.
- Maintain programme awareness for assigned mechanical scopes; flag risks to model completion or coordination resolution proactively to the BIM lead or project manager.
- Integrate engineering data from equipment data sheets, vendor drawings, manufacturer submittals, and survey information into the mechanical model; flag inconsistencies or missing data to the responsible engineer for resolution.
- Support tender and procurement packages by extracting model-derived quantities, equipment schedules, and material take-offs for inclusion in bill-of-quantities or specification annexes, for review by the responsible engineer prior to issue.
- Provide day-to-day guidance and practical BIM training to junior modellers on mechanical modelling workflows, family creation, CDE procedures, system configuration, and drawing production standards.
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing sessions, internal CPD events, and lessons-learned reviews; proactively identify and advocate for improvements to team BIM standards, model templates, and mechanical family libraries.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical or building services engineering; or an HND/HNC combined with substantial demonstrable BIM modelling experience in mechanical building services.
- Extensive BIM modelling experience for mechanical building services projects; advanced Revit MEP proficiency covering HVAC ductwork, pipework routing (heating, cooling, plumbing, fire protection), plant equipment placement, family creation, and model-derived drawing and schedule production.
- Thorough working knowledge of ISO 19650, BS EN 1192-2, LOD/LOIN frameworks, BIM Execution Plan requirements, and CDE classification and naming conventions.
- Solid understanding of mechanical system design principles — air distribution topology, duct and pipe sizing constraints, plant room spatial requirements, plumbing system configurations, and sprinkler/suppression layout rules — sufficient to validate model geometry against engineering intent without constant supervision.
- Advanced Revit MEP proficiency in worksharing, workset management, system type configuration, view template creation, sheet management, and family editor; working AutoCAD proficiency for 2D referencing, legacy drawing management, and mark-up annotation.
- Proven ability to work autonomously across multiple concurrent mechanical modelling assignments, managing programme commitments and coordinating deliverable outputs without day-to-day supervision.
- Experience providing task direction, workflow guidance, and quality review to junior BIM modellers on shared mechanical project scopes.
Preferred:
- Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP) in Revit MEP or equivalent vendor certification demonstrating advanced platform proficiency.
- Proficiency in Navisworks Manage or Solibri for federated model clash detection and issue management.
- Experience with Dynamo for Revit visual scripting to automate mechanical modelling or data management tasks.
- Hands-on experience administering or managing project content within a CDE platform, including model upload workflows, WIP-to-Shared progression, clash test configuration, and issue tracking across a multi-discipline team.
- Familiarity with IFC export workflows and open BIM data exchange, including model preparation for IFC compliance and delivery to client asset management or FM platforms.
- Experience modelling mechanical systems for data centre projects, including precision cooling (CRAC/CRAH units, in-row cooling), chilled water plant and distribution, hot/cold aisle containment coordination, raised floor plenum airflow, and fire suppression systems (clean agent, pre-action sprinkler) in high-availability environments with redundant plant configurations.
