Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Rail Safety Engineering Director to join our Goods Movement Team in the East Region. This leadership role will partner closely with Freight and DOT Client Account Managers (CAMs) across the United States to strengthen, expand, and deliver AECOM’s rail safety service offerings. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving strategic growth, enhancing technical excellence, and supporting safe, efficient rail operations for our clients.

This is a hybrid position, offering a combination of office-based and remote work flexibility.

Typical duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with Freight and DOT CAMs nationwide to identify, position, and deliver rail safety services aligned with client needs and strategic priorities
  • Lead and support rail safety pursuits, including proposal development, scope definition, and client engagement to win new work
  • Provide technical oversight and contribute to the successful delivery of rail safety projects, ensuring quality, consistency, and adherence to client and regulatory requirements
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships with railroads, state DOTs, and other key stakeholders to expand AECOM’s presence in the rail safety market
  • Identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities in rail safety and translate them into actionable service offerings and growth strategies
  • Mentor, train, and develop staff across the rail safety and broader Goods Movement team, fostering technical expertise and professional growth
  • Support the development and implementation of best practices, standards, and innovative solutions related to rail safety
  • Participate in and represent AECOM at industry organizations, conferences, and technical committees to enhance visibility and thought leadership
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including design, construction, environmental, and program management, to deliver integrated solutions
  • Contribute to internal initiatives focused on operational excellence, safety culture, and continuous improvement

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Civil Engineering or related field + 12 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 4 years of leadership
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License
  • Experience with leading and supporting rail safety projects with state DOT and freight clients

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with mentoring, training and developing staff
  • Results driven and focused on operational excellence, safety culture, and continuous improvement
