Job Description
Railcar Engineer
The Railcar Engineer is responsible for providing technical and operational coordination related to railcar systems, design, maintenance, and performance. The position serves as a key technical interface between engineering, vehicle maintenance, operations, and external stakeholders to ensure rail vehicles are safe, reliable, maintainable, and operationally fit for service. This role requires extensive hands-on experience with railcar systems and excellent communication skills to effectively bridge technical and operational functions. Position is based in Baltimore, Maryland.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide technical support and subject-matter expertise for railcar vehicle systems across design, maintenance, operations, and lifecycle management.
- Serve as a liaison between Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations to ensure alignment on vehicle performance, reliability, and service readiness.
- Review railcar designs, modifications, technical drawings, specifications, and maintenance documentation for operational and maintainability impacts.
- Support troubleshooting of in-service railcar issues and participate in root cause analyses and corrective action development.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including railcar manufacturers, vendors, and regulatory or transit agency representatives.
- Participate in testing, inspection, commissioning, and acceptance of new or modified rail vehicles.
- Conduct field assessments, vehicle inspections, and on-site observations to evaluate system performance and compliance with requirements.
- Identify risks related to vehicle systems and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and written recommendations for leadership and stakeholders.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- BA/BS and 6 years of railcar design, vehicle engineering, maintenance, or rail operations or related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with railcar systems and components, including but not limited to:
- Propulsion and braking systems
- HVAC
- Doors and passenger systems
- Power distribution and auxiliaries
- Communications and control systems
- Structural and mechanical components
- Experienced in understanding of railcar maintenance practices and operational requirements.
- Experience working effectively in a field-based, on-site environment.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering or related field
- 10 years of professional experience with at least 3 years in railcar design, vehicle engineering, maintenance, or rail operations.
- Experience working for or directly supporting a transit agency or rail operator.
- Familiarity with industry standards and guidelines and demonstrated design, testing, and commissioning experience
- Experience supporting new vehicle procurements, midlife overhauls, or vehicle modification programs.
- Experience interacting with suppliers, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
