Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Senior Transit Project Manager to support and lead complex transit planning and delivery efforts across the Southeastern United States. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with demonstrated experience delivering Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects and a strong working knowledge of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding programs and federal project development processes.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to public-sector clients, manage multidisciplinary teams, and help advance high-priority transit investments from planning through implementation. This position may be based in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, or Raleigh, with a strong preference for candidates located in one of these markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as Project Manager or Deputy Project Manager for transit planning and capital projects, with a focus on BRT corridors, networks, and supporting infrastructure
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk in accordance with AECOM’s project management and quality systems
  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams including planners, engineers, environmental specialists, and subconsultants
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients, supporting strong relationships and clear communication
  • Provide technical leadership related to FTA project development, including:
    • Capital Investment Grants (CIG – Small Starts, New Starts)
    • Formula programs (e.g., Sections 5307, 5339, 5310, 5311)
    • Grant development, compliance, and reporting
  • Support NEPA and pre-NEPA planning activities, including alternatives analysis, corridor studies, and Planning and Environmental Linkage (PEL) efforts
  • Oversee and contribute to technical deliverables, ensuring they are accurate, timely, and aligned with client expectations
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal development, scope development, and client outreach
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level staff, fostering professional growth and a collaborative team environment

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Engineering, Transportation, Public Policy, or a related field
  • 8 years of progressive experience in transit planning, project management, or capital project delivery or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or supporting BRT projects or major transit corridor initiatives
  • Knowledge of FTA funding programs, grant processes, and federal requirements
  • Experience managing budgets, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Planning, Engineering, or a related field
  • AICP, PE, or similar professional certification
  • Experience working with transit agencies in the Southeast U.S.
  • Familiarity with FTA CIG program development, including project justification and local financial commitment
  • Profesional written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience supporting projects from planning through design and implementation

  • Ability to work in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, or Raleigh (must reside in or be willing to relocate to one of these markets)
