Job Description

AECOM seeks a Social Value Director for the Americas to take the lead on advancing AECOM’s approach to social value as part of its Sustainable Legacies (ESG) strategy.

This position will offer flexibility for hybrid work schedules, to include both in-office presence and telecommute/virtual work, and can be based from major Metro areas of the US.

As the Social Value Director, you will play a key role in driving our organization's commitment to both creating positive social impact and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within our workplace, with our clients and the broader community. You will lead efforts to identify, measure, and maximize our contributions to society while also championing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion across all aspects of our operations.

This leadership position will work alongside other Sustainable Legacies leaders at AECOM, reporting to a member of the ELT.  The role will have an internal and external element.  Externally, there will be a particular focus on maximizing supplier diversity, developing grass roots partnerships in our major city hubs, teaming with historically underrepresented businesses and prioritizing social impact in the communities we serve, including indigenous communities.  The position will be responsible for building a place- and client-focused social value approach, across all Business Lines in the East, West and Canada Regions.  This position will seek to embed and demonstrate our responsibility to community, engagement, social improvement and making a positive, lasting impact to our clients and the communities where we live and work.  In addition, the role will build a strong Social Value strategy, implementation plan and governance structure for AECOM’s Americas organization.  This will involve bringing together procurement, ED&I, HR and corporate responsibility teams to drive a cohesive and joined up approach. 

Strategy and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Social Value strategy that aligns with AECOM’s Sustainable Legacies strategy and encompasses all elements of social value, including client delivery, procurement, ED&I and corporate responsibility.

  • Support development and refinement of focused Social Value strategies that differentiate AECOM and enhance our client engagement and the capture of key pursuits.

  • Lead the Social Value network of experts (both internal and external) across AECOM in the Americas

  • Advocate for Social Value and responsibility within AECOM and promote a culture of giving back to society

  • Design and implement measurement frameworks to track and evaluate the effectiveness of our Social Value activities.

  • Lead efforts to communicate our social impact internally and externally, including through reports, presentations, and other channels

  • Lead training sessions, workshops, and educational programs to raise awareness and promote understanding of Social Value among clients, employees and suppliers.

Client Delivery:

  • Align the organization to support major client Social Value initiatives, bringing expertise to support AECOM’s largest and most iconic pursuits.

  • Embed social value principles into work for clients to improve social outcomes that provide uplift for individuals, communities, and society in general.

  • Grow services advising key clients on leading approaches to implement and measure social impact approaches and policies.

  • Grow indigenous engagement practices across the Americas

  • Provide input to Social Value leaders on client practice and support complementary Social Value initiatives (diverse talent recruitment, ED&I upskilling).

Procurement:

  • Ensure an inclusive strategy to supplier engagement, promoting supplier diversity and social value-based sustainable procurement methods.  

  • Working with regional growth leads, oversee the development of proactive long-term strategic partnerships with not for profit and disadvantaged businesses (e.g. small, veteran, minority and/or women owned businesses) at strategic global locations, with a US focus.

  • Support not for profit and disadvantaged businesses with the resources to develop their strategies and capacity.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

  • Partner with our HR and ERGs to develop ongoing direction for our ED&I efforts across the Americas  

  • Partnering with our leadership, operations, legal, ERGs and HR teams, develop a clear strategy, roadmap and focus areas for how ED&I principles will be woven into our client delivery as well as AECOM’s culture, ways of working and people practices.

  • Partner with HR and business leadership to drive key ED&I goals including increasing women’s representation as well as other under-represented groups

Corporate Responsibility

  • Establish partnerships with community organizations, NGOs, government agencies, and other stakeholders to support social value initiatives and projects.

  • Represent AECOM through board and/or committee positions in relevant industry and community organizations to help raise AECOM’s Social Value thought leadership.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS plus at least 12 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education including at least 4 years of leadership experience

  • Understanding of Geo political Agendas and the social, political, and economic drivers that influence these across the different geographies, with a focus on the US.

  • Thorough understanding of US government policy and legislation around Environmental Justice and Justice40.

  • Recognized as a thought leader within the industry through participation in seminars, conferences, guest lecturing and various industry forums.

  • Track record managing and/or coordinating both internal and external subject matter experts in the areas of Social Value and ED&I.

  • Proven ability to transform, invigorate and grow a business. Successful business development/sales/growth experience in the public or private sectors, demonstrating ability to secure new business opportunities.

  • Demonstrable record in the preparation / coordination of successful client engagement or growth initiatives.

  • Proven experience successfully influencing a leadership team and multi-disciplinary project teams.

  • Flexible and proactive approach to working.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Member of recognized professional body relative to our core markets.

  • Strong alignment with the values of AECOM which is demonstrated through experiences and performance in previous organizations.

  • Excellent analytical, written, verbal, communication, and presentation skills.

  • Thorough understanding of the commercial environment as well as client facing experience within similarly large, complex organizations

  • Experience interacting with and influencing global stakeholders
