About the Role
We are looking for an experienced SAP ABAP Cloud Tech Lead to drive extensibility and development across SAP S/4HANA and SAP BTP landscapes, with a strong focus on delivering solutions for the Utilities sector.
This role combines hands-on ABAP Cloud and RAP expertise with technical leadership, guiding a team of developers, setting engineering and clean-core standards, and defining extensibility strategies that are scalable, upgrade-safe, and aligned with SAP’s cloud principles. You will play a key role in shaping technical architectures, ensuring seamless integrations, and delivering high-performance, future-proof solutions that directly support critical Utilities business processes
Responsibilities
Future-Proof Extensibility → Utilities providers need solutions that evolve with SAP upgrades without breaking. You will define and implement clean-core extensibility strategies, selecting the right approach (in-app, on-stack with ABAP Cloud, or side-by-side with SAP BTP).
Stack: ABAP Cloud, RAP, CDS, Cloud BAdIs, released APIs.Seamless User Experiences → Utilities companies expect intuitive and reliable applications. You will guide the design and development of SAP Fiori/UI5 solutions, ensuring consistency, usability, and performance across business-critical processes.
Stack: SAP Fiori/UI5, annotations, Smart Controls, Launchpad configuration.Integration Without Boundaries → Utilities landscapes require smooth interaction between SAP IS-U, S/4HANA, and external systems. You will architect and implement robust integrations and event-driven flows that ensure accurate, real-time data exchange.
Stack: OData v2/v4, REST, SOAP, ALE/IDoc, Event Mesh, API Management.Engineering Excellence → Clients depend on stability and compliance. You will enforce high engineering standards, including automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and secure coding practices.
Stack: ATC, ABAP Unit, QUnit, abapGit, gCTS/CTS+, BTP CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps.Performance at Scale → Utilities operations often involve large volumes of data and transactions. You will ensure system performance, monitoring, and optimization, enabling efficiency and scalability in demanding environments.
Stack: SQL Monitor, SAT/SQL Trace, SCI, SAP Cloud ALM, job scheduling.Leadership Through Mentorship → Strong delivery requires strong teams. You will mentor and coach developers, building expertise in ABAP Cloud and modern SAP practices while collaborating closely with functional consultants and client stakeholders.
Stack: Pair programming, ADRs, design/code reviews, stakeholder communication.
Qualifications
Must-have technical:
- 10+ years of professional software engineering on ABAP in SAP S/4HANA.
- 5+ years building ABAP Cloud extensions using RAP, CDS, and released APIs in SAP BTP (side by side) and SAP S/4HANA (on-stack)
- ABAP Cloud & RAP → Strong experience with behavior definitions and implementations (managed/unmanaged), EML, CDS views/projections, RAP services (OData V4), draft handling, validations, data determination, and reuse libraries.
- UI Development → Proficiency in SAP Fiori elements/UI5, Smart Controls, annotations, UX consistency, Launchpad configuration (S/4 & BTP), and UI adaptations.
- Clean-Core Extensibility → Fit-to-standard mindset with focus on released APIs, Cloud BAdIs, Custom Fields & Logic, BDEF-based events; avoiding or mitigating classic modifications.
- Integration → Solid background in OData v2/v4, REST, SOAP, RFC (where permitted), ALE/IDoc, Event Mesh, API Management, and Integration Flows.
- Quality & DevOps → Expertise in testing and CI/CD: ATC, ABAP Unit, UI5/QUnit; transport and version control with gCTS/CTS+, abapGit, BTP CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Project “Piper”.
- Security → Understanding of IAM (business roles/IAM apps/PFCG), OAuth2/JWT, ABAP Cloud authorization checks.
- Compliance → Knowledge of data privacy, Segregation of Duties (SoD), auditability, and document change processes.
- Packaging & Deployment → Experience with packaging options (including business catalogs) and deployment strategies across cloud environments.
- Performance → Expertise in performance tuning: SQL Monitor, SAT/SQL Trace/SCI, job scheduling, memory management.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with side-by-side extensions on SAP BTP (CAP, SAP HANA Cloud modeling, XSUAA, principal propagation, CF/Kyma basics, Destinations, Connectivity, TMS).
- Domain expertise in Utilities (S/4HANA for Utilities/IS-U) or other asset-intensive industries.
- Familiarity with SAP AI services (AI Foundation, Joule Studio, Joule agents).
- Skills in CDS analytical models and building Fiori Analytical & Overview pages.
- Exposure to operations monitoring & tracing with SAP Cloud ALM (or Solution Manager), log/metric analysis.
- Certifications such as SAP Certified Associate – Backend Developer (ABAP Cloud) or SAP Certified Associate – SAP Fiori Application Developer.
Soft/Leadership:
- Ability to mentor, coach, and raise engineering standards.
- Pragmatic approach to risk management and scope control.
- Strong communication skills for clear technical writing, ADRs, and stakeholder collaboration.
