The GCP Operations team is responsible for the management of our Google Cloud Platform supporting various teams across ABOUT YOU. It drives the constant improvement of our asset management and service consumption using best practices to automate the processes (e.g. infrastructure as code, serverless execution, GitOps, …) to maintain over 250 GCP projects. Even though we are also using some computational resources via Cloud Run, App Engine and custom Compute instances, the vast majority of our application infrastructure is managed via AWS (not part of this role).

Achievements

• Orchestrate a migration of all BigQuery and CloudStorage resources from multi-region US to EU
• Introduce consistent naming conventions for all projects and migrate the legacy setup
• Set up a terraform-based process to handle IAM permission management
• Implement various scanning processes to gather data and provide it via BigQuery tables to enable dashboard creation for better transparency

Challenges in the upcoming months:

• Ensure that DevOps best practices are used across all our teams
• Build upon and expand our scanning capabilities to enable data-based decisions for additional areas (e.g. GCP resource usage)
• Shape the team by defining the strategic roadmap aligned with our business goals
• Improve the data culture within the Google Cloud ecosystem (specifically BigQuery), i.e. provide guidance and best practices to share data across teams and ensure a high degree of quality as well as discoverability 

What you will do

• Take full ownership of our GCP resources, e.g. in terms of implementing conventions, setting up guidelines, and enforcing best practices in close collaboration with our IT security team
• Set up your own processes and automations using state-of-the-art methodologies (e.g. infrastructure as code, serverless execution, GitOps, …)
• Manage the resources and services in a cost-efficient manner, i.e. understand and challenge the usage costs and provide transparency to derive cost-saving measures (e.g. committed use discounts, BigQuery billing models, lifecycle and partition expiration policies)
• Manage all relevant stakeholders and collaborate with them to improve current solutions, e.g. by supporting development teams with any challenges related to GCP like
  • acting as an advisor for technological choices
  • implementing POCs
  • setting up continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines
• Stay up-to-date with cutting-edge technologies and updates of the in-use cloud products to proactively communicate them to the development teams
• Work within a dynamic environment with an agile working culture using methodologies such as SCRUM or Kanban

Who you are

• At least 5 years of experience as a DevOps or DevOps related roles
• Experience with one of the major cloud providers e.g. AWS, Google Cloud, Azure - or Experience using a broad range of Google Cloud technologies (e.g. BigQuery, Cloud Storage, … etc)
• Display a high degree of ownership, i.e. you feel fully responsible for the product - driving improvements and solving problems proactively
• Able to write your own tooling, e.g. via Python or Go
• Able to understand the business implications of technical decisions and outweigh their costs / benefits 
• Understand the security aspects of running a cloud infrastructure
• Open to collaborate with stakeholders 
• Eager to constantly improve/automate your own processes
• Fluent in English both spoken and written
• You are self-dependent, detail-oriented and responsible working
• You feel comfortable working in an international working environment
