Job Description

The Applications Support Statistician will perform statistical analyses and data investigations in support of battery design, validation, and root-cause analysis.  Examples of duties will include development of Designs of Experiment (DOE), scripting/programming in support of data workup (not software engineering), and sample and statistical power studies.  When available, the Applications Support Statistician will also contribute to battery validation efforts, including analysis of battery test data and product requirements.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in statistics, with a BS majoring in Mathematics/Statistics or a minor with demonstrated proficiency in the more difficult classes.  The candidate is expected to have real-world experience applying statistics to challenging problems, either via employment experience or co-op/internship with a track-record as a self-starter.

The candidate will have demonstrated proficiency in coding/programming, especially scripting languages such as Python and Matlab.  The candidate is also expected to have a reasonable working knowledge of SQL-based databases, such as MS-SQL, MySQL, or similar.  Ability to do some light programming in C/C++/C# would be beneficial, but this position will not encompass formal software development or engineering.

The successful candidate will be very flexible, in terms of ability to support multiple disparate tasks as well as the ability to think flexibly in terms of problem solving approach.  This position will frequently deal with problems such as

  • “How many samples do we need to demonstrate a failure rate below 1% at the 95% confidence interval”?

  • “Please provide a DOE for 4 different variables, 3 levels each? How many variants are needed?”

  • “We have some messy data in Excel, it needs to be parsed, extracted, and plotted?”

  • “This database query is slow – how can we speed it up?”

This position will interface frequently with peers responsible for cell chemistry design, cell mechanical design, requirements, validation, process design, manufacturing, and many other functions.  As part of this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to learn the lithium-ion battery market, one of today’s most exciting industries.

Travel up to 15% (including international) required.

This position will report to Director, Design Analysis.
