Job Description

Hours: 75-100% time – 30-40 hours per week, for 6-12 months (negotiable and flexible with candidate’s needs).
 

Application and Start dates: Preferred start date August 8. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
 

Salary and benefits: $19/hour. Mileage reimbursement is provided at the IRS-approved rate.
 

Location: Remote, with occasional travel required. The Fellow must live in Wisconsin.
 

Summary: 350 Wisconsin is a 501(c)(3) grassroots advocacy and activist organization that works to change hearts and minds, laws and policies, and humanity’s massive systems to make transformational progress toward environmental justice and solving the climate crisis. We mobilize individuals and communities throughout Wisconsin to achieve a livable future for all. 350 Wisconsin is committed to climate justice, the transition to clean, renewable energy, stopping oil pipelines in Wisconsin and surrounding states, and pushing financial institutions to divest from fossil fuel-related companies. 

We are eager to hire a communications and development fellow who can work with 350 Wisconsin’s staff and volunteer leadership to coordinate and implement messaging and fundraising programs. 

  • The fellow will support our communication strategy to educate and activate climate-concerned individuals and will engage with our campaign teams to support their communication and messaging needs. 

  • The fellow will support our fundraising team and development director with event planning and research support, donor research and stewardship, and database management.

Experience is preferred with strategic communications, media outreach, fundraising, grant research, and/or issue advocacy. Candidates must also exhibit a passion for building the power of people in combating climate change and a strong commitment to DEIJ (diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice).

Essential Functions:

  • Communications:

    • Collaborates with 350 Wisconsin staff and leadership on developing short- and long-term communications goals and strategies

    • Develop content for social media, website, and blog

    • Update public-facing materials (flyers, display tables, etc)

    • Support with email blasts

  • Development:

    • Support fundraising communications and planning

    • Support event planning, including: research and coordination with venues, communications and publicity, event setup, and volunteer coordination

    • CRM database management

    • Research prospective donors (individuals and businesses)

    • Prepare business sponsorship materials

    • Communication with donors (thank you notes and reminders)

    • Research grant opportunities

    • Engage with volunteers

Qualifications

Attributes and Skills/Experience:

  • Candidates for the position should have these attributes:

    • Express and articulate their commitment to strong grassroots engagement to address climate change.

    • Manage multiple priorities, reach goals and meet deadlines. 

    • Communicate effectively verbally, visually and in writing, across different types of media.

    • Work both as part of a close-knit team and individually to drive program

    • Meet people where they are and engage them in conversations and actions that work to build a strong and diverse grassroots base for climate advocacy.

    • Be self-motivated and pay excellent attention to details.

    • Work and build collaborations with a diversity of individuals and organizations. Be proactive in regards to equity, inclusion and justice concerns.

  • Candidates for this position should have these Skills/Experience:

    • A degree (or equivalent experience) in a field related to communications, nonprofit management, marketing, journalism, environmental studies, public policy, or political science.

    • Proficiency with Google Suites or similar

    • Proficiency with social media 

    • Understand and utilize database tools to advance this work. 

  • Candidates for the position should have:

    • Secure access to a computer and the Internet. (Public computers, such as computers in public libraries, are not acceptable.)

    • Access to a phone.

    • Regular access to a working vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license (preferred).

Additional Information

Work Environment: 350 Wisconsin Action operates virtually, without a brick and mortar office. Most, but not all, members of the staff, board, and political action team live in the greater Madison Wisconsin area. Time will be divided between work from the organizer’s home or other secure location, work in the field with volunteers, and meetings with both colleagues and contemporaries from partner organizations. The position requires travel within Wisconsin for organizing meetings, events, trainings, 1-1s, and other functions. 

Hours are flexible. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Physical Demands: Occasional physical demands include setting up for events, working on mailings, tabling at outreach events and filing. This would require the ability to carry 25 lbs.; lift files; use hands to fold, stuff, seal, and stamp envelopes; open filing cabinets; and bend or stand as necessary. The physical demands may also include driving.
