Job Description

Overview

The Senior Battery Design Engineer will work in the Product Development team to support the launch of 24M’s proprietary cell technology. The Senior Battery Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design and validation of lithium-ion cells in pouch and prismatic can formats. The Senior Battery Design Engineer will work closely with other engineers and scientists as part of a fast-moving, cross-functional R&D team. Expected duties include but are not limited to: maintaining product documentation throughout the design cycle, designing or redesigning cell components to meet cost and performance targets, and planning and executing component validation tests.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Incorporate R&D advancements and evolving partner needs into product design changes
  • Maintain product documentation according to 24M standards
  • Coordinate with the Advanced Manufacturing team to develop mechanical cell designs that push performance barriers while maintaining manufacturability
  • Perform design validation testing on components and assemblies
  • Complete technical reports and communicate results to the broader team and partners
  • Design and source tools and fixtures as needed
  • Ability to work on 3-5 projects at a given time

Qualifications

Qualifications:  Required Knowledge, Skills, Educational Background, and/or Licenses

  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software (Solidworks preferred)
  • Proficiency with GD&T, including tolerance stackups
  • Ability to project cell properties (e.g. capacity, energy density) from given electrode properties
  • Basic machine shop experience

Required Experience

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and validation of lithium ion cells
  • Familiarity with common battery manufacturing processes including ultrasonic welding, laser welding, heat sealing, etc.
  • Experience using DFMEA to identify and address risk areas early in the design phase
  • Pack and module design experience is a plus
  • Experience designing cells for enhanced abuse tolerance is a plus

Areas of Independent Action

  • Flag potential issues from initial design through final packaging to promote the delivery of high quality product to partners and customers
  • Interact with other R&D and engineering groups to promote rational decision-making in research and development
  • Keep abreast of industry trends (attending conferences, benchmarking competitor’s products, etc.)

Additional Information

Physical and Environmental Standards

  • Ability to alternate work on-site or from home as required
  • Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point)
  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers
  • Must be capable of working long hours as needed
  • Travel will be required in support of customer discussions, supplier discussions, and relevant conference attendance.
