What you’ll do:

You will be responsible for leading human factors/usability engineering activities at Proteus and with Proteus’ strategic partners. You will operate at the intersection of the HFE discipline in context of regulatory innovation and new medical products that combine drugs, devices and software. Activities will cover both thought leadership as well as full support for the design life cycle of a product or product feature, including but not limited to: task analysis, usability risk analysis, formative evaluation(s), summative evaluation, and creation of the usability engineering file. Output from these activities (e.g. research, analysis) will directly inform product design, design execution, and regulatory strategy / submissions.


Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

  • Apply human factors expertise to support of Proteus strategic partners[KA1]
  • Complete HFE/UE activities and deliverables:
    • Research and define user needs and requirements, characteristics of use (e.g. user group, use environment), and task analyses.
    • Create and maintain usability risk analyses in collaboration with client, designers, clinical engineers, and others.
    • Create and maintain usability engineering files.
    • Design and execute usability (human factors) studies at various stages of product development from early prototypes through formal FDA-mandated validation. Author usability study protocols and reports, moderate studies, and analyze study data.
    • Communicate findings and relevant recommendations to internal and external stakeholders of all organizational levels
  • Educate strategic partners and Proteus on human factors principles and processes
  • Act as a trusted advisor to Proteus’ strategic partners by acting as a liaison between us and our partners for human factors/usability engineering related activities to ensure that needs and/or requirements are communicated effectively within the Proteus organization.
  • Manage usability engineering activities within development projects and provide schedules and status to Proteus organization and alliance managers.
  • Keep abreast of regulations and best practices for medical device human factors (e.g. IEC 62366, AAMI HE75) and advise client regarding regulatory issues related to usability engineering.
  • Collaborate closely with teams to influence product design, design definition and execution.
  • Contribute to product and service designs by providing guidance and presenting research results, ideas, and feedback to interaction designers and developers. Assist creation and revision of user-interface requirements documents.
  • Communicate learnings in an actionable manner, providing content and guidance for designs.
  • Present and effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels (design team through VP and CEO level stakeholders)
  • Collaborate with external Human Factor Engineering consultancies, internal stakeholders and partner organizations.

Qualifications


  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams to build consensus and achieve results
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking to analyze problems which may require creative approaches and multiple factors
  • Demonstrate strong presentation and communication skills
  • Sense of self-initiative, autonomy, problem solving, critical analysis and ownership
  • Ability to connect effectively in person and remote through verbal and written communication
  • The right candidate should have 3+ years of experience delivering human factors engineering in device development engineering in a pharmaceutical, medical device, or other regulated environment or related field.
  • They should also be familiar with US/EU guidance and standards related to human factors/usability, design controls and risk management (e.g. 62366-1:2015, 14971:2012).
  • Degree in human factors engineering, HCI, industrial engineering, experimental or cognitive psychology, cognitive engineering or related discipline.
  • Comfortable with MS Office
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally
