Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

We seek individuals with Cabinet Maker and/or Finish Carpentry knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position.  The primary role of a Craftsman is to build custom items not normally produced by the various production departments. The work of a Craftsman may involve preparation and manufacture of custom components for stairs, circular and spiral staircases, displays, assisting with developing and testing prototypes, etc. This position is expected to have significant experience in a woodworking environment, experience using multiple types of woodworking equipment, ability to improve upon existing designs, consult on new ideas and processes and to work independently.

This positon is expected to be actively involved in any continual process improvements of this and other departments and is expected to be part of a cross-functional team that requires minimal direct supervision. This position will perform the listed duties and any others reasonably assigned by their supervisor or his/her designee.

Qualifications

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the daily tasks and job duties as follows: 

  • Functional and working hands-on knowledge of various types of machinery and various power tools typically used in a cabinet making or custom wood working environment and the manufacturing abilities and limits of the equipment (i.e.: molders, planers, support tooling, fixturing) plus be able to set up and operate equipment.   
  • Working knowledge of arithmetic and geometry and know how to apply. 
  • Proven and demonstrable design and design problem solving skills.
  • Use measuring equipment, hand tools, etc. associated with woodworking. 
  • Read and interpret engineering drawing/sketches/diagrams and read work orders or other instructions to determine operating methods or sequences.
  • Confer with sales staff, customers or designers to determine order specifications
  • Compare physical characteristics of materials or products to specifications or standards. 
  • Measure materials to mark reference points, cutting lines, or other indicators. 
  • Estimate material requirements for production.
  • Trim excess material from workpieces.  
  • Attach decorative or functional accessories to products. 
  • Cut industrial materials in preparation for fabrication or processing.
  • Shape surfaces or edges of wood workpieces. 
  • Drill holes in parts, equipment, or materials. 
  • Assemble wood products. 
  • Measure dimensions of completed products or workpieces to verify conformance to specifications. 
  • Assist other departments as needed in providing material, making repairs, etc.
  • Understand the production process.
  • Self-starter requiring minimal supervision that is results and deadline driven.
  • Ability to functionally use a personal computer to perform inquires, update information, and print reports on a daily basis.
  • Able to obtain and keep a Powered Industrial Truck License. 
  • Willing to train new hires or new departmental transfers. 
  • Able and comfortable working in a cross functional environment, interfacing with other departments as needed to solve problems and to offer assistance, i.e., custom quoting, purchasing, marketing, new
    product development.  
  • Ability to multi-task. 
  • At least 18 years old and legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must be willing to work overtime, alternate shifts, and weekends as/if needed on short notice.
  • Other tasks as assigned based upon the needs of LJ Smith and/or the customer.
