Job Description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for directing the accounting and financial functions of a privately held, mid-size, multi-location company in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. In addition to accounting, the CFO will have local IT, risk management, Human Resources and treasury responsibilities. The CFO, as a member of senior management, will have executive and strategic responsibilities related to the organization’s growth planning and execution.  We are an inventory intensive enterprise with a high volume of transactions supporting all business activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The daily tasks, duties and responsibilities required to perform as described above are as follows:

  • Plan, direct, organize, implement and evaluate the organization’s accounting function and performance. Participate, evaluate and advise on budgets, capital requests and other long-range planning initiatives; including new products, strategies and programs. 
  • Develop credibility for the accounting and finance group
    by managing the timely and accurate analysis of financial statements and budgets in order to assist the President.
  • Provide executive management with advice on the financial implications of business activities.
  • Create and/or maintain state of the art management information system to support decision making.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Provide operational support to assist line managers in maximizing profit.
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the organization; i.e., evaluation of potential alliances, acquisitions and/or mergers. 
  • Manage and control due diligence process on any proposed acquisitions.
  • Manage transition process on acquired organizations to L.J. Smith control.
  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting and proper payment to foreign suppliers.
  • Serve as key point of contact with external auditors and collaborate with parent company to complete annual financial statement audit.
  • Oversee the preparation of supporting documents required to complete local, state, and federal tax returns.
  • Maintain and assess local treasury needs and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position, including relationships with financial institutions .
  • Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism which includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.
  • Be an advisor from the financial perspective on any contracts into which the company may enter. 
  • Evaluation of the financial organization structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as providing individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) of individuals.
  • Set-up and maintain proper costing methods
  • Lead and support local IT efforts as directed by the President and parent office. Includes ongoing deployment and extension of ERP and reporting system.  Set long term IT strategy to support operational efficiency. 
  • Plan, direct and organize company insurance program.
  • Assist the President with risk management needs and assessments. 
  • Assist in the preparation of Board and Shareholder meeting documentation. 
  • Lead and support the Director of Human Resources on all employee matters as directed by President.  Includes, assisting parent office with benefits’ review, Government reporting, job classification/compensation review, safety and more. 
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and monitor open legal issues.
  • Perform other related duties as directed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the daily tasks and job duties bulleted above are
as follows:

  • BS in Accounting or Finance, MBA and/or CPA/CMA highly desirable.
  • 10+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, preferably in a manufacturing or construction industry. 
  • Experience in partnering with an executive team with high level and oral communication skills.
  • Costing experience a plus, preferably in a manufacturing or construction industry.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable.
  • PC proficiency is essential (MS Office), strong working knowledge of ERP systems and management reporting solutions.

manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment with the ability to travel as required
