Job Description

The Sustainability Orientation Coordinator will be working with the SSMU Vice-President (Sustainability & Operations) to coordinate the efforts of Faculty Frosh (AUS, SUS, EUS, MUS, BASIC, EdUS, MUSA, etc.) to institutionalize sustainable programming and purchasing in their events. They will train Faculty Frosh staff and create resources to ensure these efforts are carried on in subsequent years. They will be essential in ensuring the success of a Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF) initiative entitled “The Sustainable Orientation Project”.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Ensure that each Faculty Frosh incorporates more sustainable practices in event programming;

     a. Train representatives from each Faculty (e.g. Frosh Inclusivity Coordinators and others) to carry out sustainable programming for their events (i.e., zero waste, accessible, and equitable);


     b. Coordinate weekly meetings of the Inclusivity & Sustainability Coordinators and assess progress;

     c. Increase awareness of sustainability among Frosh events’ participants by working with Faculty Frosh Coordinators and the McGill Office of Sustainability Communications team;

     d. Coordinate with the newly-created McGill Sustainable Events SPF project team to access their sustainable events toolkit and certification services;

     e. Develop and distribute a survey in collaboration with the MOOS Communications Officer to gauge the success of the Sustainable Orientation Project;

     f. In consultation with the Faculty Frosh staff and SSMU VP (Operations & Sustainability), develop a Frosh Sustainability Guide to advise future organizers;

2. With the support of the SSMU VP (Operations & Sustainability), SSMU VP (Internal), and the Faculty Frosh staff, coordinate to purchase more sustainable good

     a. Developing a list of sustainable producers for Frosh t-shirts, tote bags, and other essential resources for the events;

     b. Liaising with the SPF Staff to ensure that SPF funds are allocated towards the purchase of these more sustainable goods.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the SSMU Vice-President (Sustainability & Operations) in the context of The Sustainable Orientation Project.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

The Sustainability Coordinator should be available to attend the Frosh Retreat from May 19 to May 21 inclusively.

Qualifications

  1. High energy and motivation, and at ease working in a high pressure environment;
  2. Strong academic or practical background in sustainability;
  3. Excellent organization and planning skills;
  4. Great interpersonal skills;
  5. Knowledge of the SSMU and Frosh administrative structures;
  6. Knowledge of event planning and/or working with vendors;
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, French an asset;
  8. Can work with computer and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook);
  9. Integrity, critical thinking, and creativity;
  10. Experience chairing meetings an asset.

Additional Information

  • Paid position: $13.75 per hour + benefits
  • Hours: Between 10-20 hours/week (for an average of 15 hours/week)
  • Contract: May 15th, 2017 through September 22th, 2017
