Job Description

Summary: The Director of Academic Advising oversees campus-wide academic advising initiatives and the Advising Office. This position is housed within the Center for Student Success and reports to the Associate Dean for Student Success. The Director of Academic Advising is charged with the coordination, oversight, and assessment of undergraduate advising programs and practices in order to ensure quality academic advising for all students. The Director coordinates a comprehensive plan for academic advising grounded in best practices and research in advising, retention, and student success. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
• Oversee Royal Advising, Queens’ model for first and second year undergraduate academic advising, in conjunction with a faculty facilitator.
• Supervise three full-time professional advisors and support their work with assigned student populations.
• Organize and coordinate academic components of student orientation in collaboration with Student Life and faculty.
• Assume primary responsibility for advising a cohort of undergraduate students regarding their academic progress and/or concerns.
• Develop and support a comprehensive training program for faculty advisors in collaboration with academic deans and the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence.
• Ensure ongoing assessment of advising with a view to continually improving its effectiveness and enhancing student experience and satisfaction.
• In collaboration with department chairs and deans, coordinate the assignment of faculty advisors for undergraduate students with declared majors.
• Maintain, update, and disseminate resources that facilitate students’ awareness and understanding of their academic standing and progress.
• Act as a resource for campus constituencies and committees whose responsibilities relate to student retention and, as appropriate, take a leadership role in retention initiatives.
• Represent the Advising Office and/or the Center for Student Success at open houses, admission events, and other functions as necessary.
Nonessential Duties include:
• Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Student Success.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required:
• Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, coaching, or related field.
• At least 3 years direct experience with university advising.
• Supervisory experience and/or successful experience as a team leader.
• Demonstrated commitment to student development and passion for working with diverse undergraduate populations.
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentational communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Strong organizational and follow-up and follow-through skills.
• Proven ability to safeguard sensitive and confidential information.
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
• Computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office suite and other relevant programs.

• Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions – 75-100% of the time

Work Conditions
• Work is performed in office environments, involving contact with students, faculty, staff, parents, service providers and vendors
• Work has deadlines, interruptions, and may be stressful at times
• Work occasionally involves nights and weekends and travel (air, public and/or private transportation)
