Job Description

System Administrator – Installs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains server configurations (hardware and software) to ensure their confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Also manages accounts, firewalls, and patches. Responsible for access control, passwords, and account creation and administration. (DODD 8140.01)


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 10 operating systems as provided by the DoD Secure Baseline Host-Army (SBH-A) desktop and server installation images.
  • Knowledge of Windows 2012 R2 Server.
  • Knowledge of basic system administration, network, and operating system hardening techniques
  • Knowledge of file extensions (e.g., .dll, .bat, .zip, .pcap, .gzip, etc.)
  • Knowledge of file system implementations (e.g., NTFS, FAT, EXT)
  • Knowledge of IT security principles and methods, such as firewalls, demilitarized zones, and encryption
  • Knowledge of local area and wide area networking principles and concepts including bandwidth management
  • Knowledge of measures or indicators of system performance and availability
  • Knowledge of network protocols such as TCP/IP, Dynamic Host Configuration, Domain Name System (DNS), and directory services
  • Knowledge of new technological developments in server administration
  • Knowledge of organizational IT user security policies (e.g. account creation, password rules, access, control, etc.)
  • Knowledge of performance tuning tools and techniques
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for integrating server components
  • Knowledge of server administration and systems engineering theories, concepts, and methods
  • Knowledge of server and client operating systems
  • Knowledge of server diagnostic tools and fault identification techniques
  • Knowledge of systems administration concepts
  • Knowledge of the enterprise IT architecture
  • Knowledge of the type and frequency of routine maintenance needed to keep equipment functioning properly
  • Knowledge of transmission methods (e.g., Bluetooth, RFID, IR, Wi-Fi, paging, cellular, satellite dishes, etc.) and jamming techniques that enable transmission of information or prevent installed systems from operating correctly
  • Knowledge of Unix command line (e.g., mkdir, mv, ls, passwd, grep, etc.)
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies and virtual machine development and maintenance
  • Knowledge of VPN security
  • Skill in conducting server planning, management, and maintenance
  • Skill in configuring and optimizing software
  • Skill in configuring and utilizing software-based computer protection tools (e.g., software firewalls, anti-virus software, anti-spyware)
  • Skill in correcting physical and technical problems which impact server performance
  • Skill in diagnosing connectivity problems
  • Skill in diagnosing failed servers
  • Skill in identifying and anticipating server performance, availability, capacity, or configuration problems
  • Skill in installing computer and server upgrades
  • Skill in maintaining directory services
  • Skill in monitoring and optimizing server performance
  • Skill in recovering failed servers
  • Skill in system administration for Unix/Linux operating systems
  • Skill in using virtual machines
  • Skill in writing technical solutions and costing estimates for lifecycle replacement of systems, as well as new emerging requirements for both garrison and deployed forensic laboratories.
  • Skill in conducting routine hardware and software audits of workstations and servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining a comprehensive operating system hardware and software configuration database/library of all supporting documentation.

Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and 3-5 years of general IT / IS experience. (Six (6) years of general experience is considered equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree. With a Master's Degree, three (3) years of general experience is acceptable. With a PhD, 1 year of general experience is required.)
  • Must possess and maintain a current DoD approved Information Assurance (IA) baseline security certification as well as current commercial Computing Environment (CE) certifications for the operating system(s) and/or security related tools/devices they support IAW DoDD 8570.01M, DoDD 8140.01, and Army Regulation 25-2.
